Supply Shortages May Herald in era of ‘Peak Diamond’

De Beers Chief Gareth Penny has been vocal about supply shortfalls, and a lack of prospects to keep up with increasing demand for diamonds. With the Chinese diamond market exploding and decreasing output from some of the largest mining operations in the world, is the market heading towards “Peak Diamond.”

Canadian Diamonds in the Rough

Canadian diamond miner, Stornoway Diamond Corporation, has released new information about their Renard Project in Quebec. Larger than originally thought, the operation is targeted to start producing by late 2013. The government of Quebec, looking to reduce deficits, is raising taxes on the province’s mining operations. Also, Harry Winston reports losses in 2009, yet remains hopeful for the future of the industry.

Stornoway Diamond reported corporate updates

Stornoway Diamond Corporation revealed that in the recently released Quebec provincial budget for fiscal year 2009-2010 an allocation of $698 million dollars has been set aside for two road infrastructure projects in the north of Quebec, including the Route des Monts Otish from Chibougamau to the Otish Mountains.
