Japan’s polished diamond imports slipped 30 percent to $46.2 million in April 2009. For full story, click here
During March 2009, Japan recorded a surge in the import of polished diamonds by volume, but a dip in the value of imports. The country imported 26 percent more diamonds in carats, amounting to 217,956 carats. For full story, click here
With the holiday season behind us, now is the time diamond miners and retailers should have full pockets and empty shelves. However, with the holiday season of ’08 coming on the back of economic catastrophe, countries across the globe are reporting stark numbers for diamond exports and imports.
As economic turmoil spread around the globe in ‘08, the diamond industry lost some of its brilliance. The industry was doing well until about September, then diamond prices and sales went on a steep descent. Diamond prices are down about one-third since their high last August
Here at diamond investing news, we have been following how the financial crisis has been impacting the industry. For a brief summary over the past few months, it was not until the end of September that dropping revenues became an issue to diamond industry participants.
Polished diamond imports to the emirate grew by 99% during the first 6 months of 2009 to reach $2.9 billion from $1.4 billion during the same period in 2007. Trade of rough diamonds grew by 36% to reach $3.3 billion at the end of the first half of 2008. For full story, click here
