U.S. scientists say they have discovered that compression makes a diamond so strong it can withstand nearly a million times atmospheric pressure. Scientists from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the University of Rochester and the University of California-Berkeley noted that most natural diamonds result from the compression of carbon-containing minerals under high-temperature conditions at depths of 87 to 120 miles over periods ranging from 1 billion to 3.3 billion years.
